Tour Members Say...

The sights, sounds, smells and sheer wonderment at the beauty of all directions has been with us ever since our return. Not a day goes by without our talking of some aspect of our adventure, and at night I am transported to those stunning plains and mountains, and the people we met.         Gretchen, North Wales

If you look at the earth, there are certain places that seem to have power and we don't know what kind of power it is, except you have a different feeling, You feel energized... For most Americans, the Holy Land exists on another continent. But for Native people,
the holy land is here.

Alaska, it’s the final frontier of the American West, a majestic land of stunning glaciers, rugged landscapes, and sweeping colorful valleys, and Alaska is home to eleven distinct Alaska Native cultures with many tribes within each of those cultures; many of whom still live the old subsistence lifeway and speak one of twenty indigenous languages.  One of the few places on earth where as yet Mother Nature has been left largely undisturbed so that wildlife is abundant and living in their natural state, Alaska is certainly on most people’s ‘Life List’. This is a one off journey for 2010 only.

Indigenous peoples of Alaska traditionally lived in an expansive region beginning south of the Brooks Mountain Range down to the Kenai Peninsula and these Peoples’ separation by land formations created eleven distinct linguistic groups. The tribes were based along five major riverways and migrated seasonally, traveling in small groups to fish, hunt and trap. Yet as with all Peoples of the world, similarities are greater than differences, evolving mainly around adaptation to each tribes’ environment so naturally, food, tools, homes and clothing of the cultures reflect the geography and climate of the area each group lived in.

And what a place to live! Studded between Alaska’s great mountain ranges are canyons, waterfalls, salmon-filled rivers, blue glaciers (100000 of them, totaling 5% of the Alaskan land base and even bluer when it’s cloudy) temperate rainforest, tundra and spectacular endless tidal coastline,.

At the heart of traditional tribal life is respect for all living things. And in the Athabascan subsistence lifeway sharing is imperative. In some communities, even today a brother still takes responsibility for training and socializing his sister's children so that the children grow up knowing their clan history and customs.

DID YOU KNOW? Even if you saw a million acres a day,
it would still take you more than a year to see all of Alaska.

Go Native America didn’t build our excellent reputation on missing anything out of our journeys (our past tour members will testify to that) therefore in creating People of the Midnight Sun 2010, we had to think long and hard regarding where to go, but also where not to go.

So we simply stayed true to the cultural and wild Alaska focus of this special journey because the land, the people, the four-legged, the winged and those of the waters are all inter-connected. And when we prioritized that sense of connectivity, the result became a magical journey unlike any experience currently offered anywhere, and at a remarkable base price which you can customize and control according to your own dreams and aspirations.

Our itinerary includes interaction with the people of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian nations, Sitka Tribe of Alaska, and others. The itinerary is long and informative (please email here and request a copy be emailed to you) and includes:

  • Tongass National Forest
  • Denali National Park
  • Juneau, the Mendenhall glacier with cultural and marine activities
  • Sitka, traditional dancing, art, totem pole art history and tribal explanations
  • A day at a traditional Fish Camp learning of many subsistence lifeway essentials and traditions
  • Anchorage museums, galleries, art posts, eateries and traditional crafts
  • The Portage glacier and costal waterways
  • Talkeetna from where you have opportunity to flight-see the highest mountain in North America
  • Denali to Kantishna, a wildlife haven of unparalleled beauty and spirit where we explore the connections between the two-legged, the four legged and the winged of the air.
