APACHE! October - November 2009
Cochise, Geronimo, Victorio, and Mangas Coloradas, all legendary Apache leaders whose names and deeds reverberate through the canyons, mountains, and deserts of their homelands. All of those men were Chiricahua Apaches, and on Apache! we follow their trails through history, a journey that weaves through the Western Apache Nations of San Carlos and White Mountain, as well as the traditional Chiricahua heartland of the Dragoon and Chiricahua Mountains. We begin in the cactus-studded deserts of Saguaro National Monument, a landscape commonly associated with Apaches, but should it be? We separate Hollywood from reality in our introductory orientation. We travel north to the beautiful Aravaipa Canyon and discuss Apache-EuroAmerican/Hispanic relations in the 19th Century with the infamous Camp Grant incident as the focal point. With these points of reference, we enter the country of the Chiricahuas – incredible desert landscapes of impossible rock formations where the mountains appear to be created of columns of rock that construct impenetrable barriers to those unfamiliar with the apparent maze. Cochise selected his Stronghold in the Dragoon Mountains for that very reason, and we walk the historic trail through the Stronghold and learn not only of Cochise as an individual, but the lifeway of his people in that unique environment. We will experience the living history of historic Apache Pass, and you will walk in the footsteps of Cochise, Geronimo, and Mangas Colorado, looking upon the land that they did, so little has it changed. The stage station and agency maybe ruins, but they are yet defined, and in the recounting of events on Apache Pass every feature of the land remains.
Wending north, we pass before the sacred mountain, Dzil Nchaa Si Ann, where the One God, Ussen, sent his emissaries, the Mountain Spirits, to show the people His chosen lifeway, before entering the San Carlos Apache Reservation. On San Carlos we learn of the tumultuous era of the old agency, visiting the site of Geronimo’s camp on the reservation, and then hearing of Victorio’s quest for freedom on the route he guided his people over to escape the hardships and indignities of confinement. Our hosts on San Carlos will provide cultural insights and activities, including Western Apache language instruction, Apache craft workshops, and traditional storytelling sessions, before preparing a traditional Apache meal. From San Carlos we travel north and cross the magnificent Salt River Canyon as we visit historic Cibecue, and then make our way to the higher elevations of the legendary Fort Apache, amidst the tall pines and bugling elk of the White Mountain Apache Reservation. At White Mountain, we explore Fort Apache and discuss General George Crook’s philosophy and the legacy of Fort Apache. The White Mountain Apache Cultural Center offers both interactive multi-media as well as traditional opportunities to experience Apache culture. “Once we moved about the like the wind,” said Geronimo, and on Apache! you follow that breath of freedom through the sacred, historic, the triumphs and tragedies, the beauty of the land and the resilience of the human spirit. Apache! A remarkable journey honoring a remarkable people.
